McIntire Group Protests New ‘Social Creed’
From the Philadelphia Bulletin of June 23, 1967
Bible Presbyterians, in protest against the “social creed” contained in the “new Confession of 1967” of the United Presbyterian Church, are driving a black hearse through sections of the city and suburbs, concluding a cross country demonstration.
On arriving here yesterday the hearse stopped first at 3rd and Arch streets, the scene of a one-time church where the Presbyterian General Assembly was first held in 1789. It will be taken to the statue of John Witherspoon, a Presbyterian pioneer, on Belmont Ave, in Fairmount Park, on Sunday.
A book, attacking the large United Presbyterian denomination, called “Death of a Church,” by Rev. Carl McIntire, of Collingswood, N.J., is being distributed from the hearse. Mr. McIntire was dismissed from the Presbyterian Church in the 1930’s on charges of disobeying its discipline, and he subsequently founded the fundamentalist Bible Presbyterian Church.
