BRIEF HISTORY OF PROGRESS, 1903-1951
Our first Sunday school was organized on March 29, 1903, with a membership of 35.
Officers. . . . . . . . 4
Teachers. . . . . . . . 6
Scholars. . . . . . . .25

This little group met in Tatem’s Hall, which stood on the corner of Haddon and Irving Avenues.
On August 16, 1905, ground was broken for the first church and Sunday school building at Haddon and Frazer Avenues.
The first service was held in this building on December 17, 1905. The building was dedicated on Sunday morning, April 8, 1906. The total cost of the building, with all equipment and furnishing~, was approximately $6,000.
In 1913 the membership of the Sunday school had increased so rapidly that it became necessary to secure other quarters for several departments. For this purpose the second floor of the Collingswood National Bank (now The Citizens National Bank), known as the Bank Hall; was rented for the use of the Primary Department, and a dwelling house on the corner of Frazer and Haddon Avenues, directly across the street from the church (now where the Christian Beacon Building is located), was rented for the Intermediate Department.
In 1915 a lot was purchased at the corner of Fern and Maple Avenues at a cost of $5,550. This lot has an area of approximately 29,000 square feet.
On October 2, 1916, ground was broken for a new structure. The first service was held on Sunday, September 2, 1917. This new building was erected at a cost of $35,000.
The membership of the Sunday school increased rapidly; so, on May 22, 1928, it was decided to build the most modern and best equipped Sunday school building for the needs of the Sunday school.
Pages Two and Three

Ground for a new building facing on Fern Avenue was broken on Sunday afternoon, December 2, 1928. The first Sunday school service was held in this new building on Sunday morning, November 17, 1929, at 9:45.
From November 17, 1929, until March 27, 1938, the whole Sunday school increased not only in numbers, but also in “wisdom and stature, and in favour with God.”
On Sunday evening, March 27, 1938, the congregation of the church of approximately 1200 people left the church building at the corner of Fern and Maple Avenues. The contributing cause for this was a complete separation from the parent organization, the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A., because of recent official and judicial actions of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, U. S. A., in upholding the modernism which has become more and more entrenched in the churches and Sunday schools of the denomination, and the suspension from the ministry of those who refused to obey certain mandates issued clearly in violation of the established constitution of the church, and contrary to the supreme authority of the Bible as the infallible Word of God. Our Pastor, the Rev. Carl McIntire, was one of the members of the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions who was disciplined, forbidden to preach the Gospel and to take the Holy Communion.
On Sunday morning, April 3, 1938, part of the Sunday school met in a tent erected at the corner of Haddon Avenue and Cuthbert Boulevard. Some departments of the school met in the Masonic Hall in Collingswood.
On April 24, 1938, ground was broken for the erection of a frame tabernacle in which Sunday school classes of each department could meet. On Sunday, May 29, 1938, just one month and five days after ground had been broken, the building was completed, and the entire Sunday school met in the Tabernacle. It was in the Tabernacle of the Bible Presbyterian Church that the first and second General Synods of the Bible Presbyterian denomination were held and the Constitution of the Church, representing itself as a true spiritual successor of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A., was adopted. The congregation (now numbering 1645) had a part in the formation of the American Council of Christian Churches in 1941, and of the International Council of Christian Churches in 1948.
We thank the Lord for the group which has been faithful all these years; and how much we thank and praise our blessed Lord for this, the finest Sunday school building we have ever had in our history, 1903-1951.
May it be the real desire of each member of our Sunday school to bring at least one new member. Let us increase our membership to 1000 before January, 1952, so that our record may read:
1903 – 35 members
1952 – Exceeds 1000 members.
“But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations” (Revelation 2:25, 26).
“Be strong . . . and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts” (Haggai 2:4).
