MURDER OF ATHEIST O’HAIR

FBI Suspects O’Hair, Children Were Slain
by John MacCormack, San Antonio Express-News
 The Washington Times, 4-9-99

Checking whether the bodies were dismembered and buried in metal drums.

The FBI has been extremely tight-lipped about its interest in the 1995 disappearance of Madalyn Murray O’Hair, her son Jon Garth Murray and daughter Robin Murray O’Hair.

SAN ANTONIO – Federal investigators suspect that atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair and her two adult children were dismembered and put into 55-gallon drums after being killed in late 1995, according to sources.

Agents believe the three may have been slain in San Antonio and then transported 120 miles west to a hidden burial site on a 5,000-acre ranch near the tiny town of Camp Wood, some 120 miles west of San Antonio.

But a search of the area last weekend apparently didn’t turn up drums or anything else, despite the concerted efforts of three dozen FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents using metal detectors, dogs, a backhoe and heat-sensitive equipment.

The owner of the property is not suspected of any wrongdoing, but attention is focusing on an Austin man who leased the property at the Time, according to sources.

Darren Holmes, an FBI spokesman in San Antonio, declined to. comment on what authorities believe happened to Mrs. O’Hair and her children or any federal interest in the lease-holder. Mr. Holmes also declined to talk about the weekend search at Camp Wood.

The FBI has been extremely tight-lipped about its interest in the 1995 disappearance of Mrs. O’Hair, her son Jon Garth Murray and daughter Robin Murray O’Hair, refusing even to concede an investigation is under way.

Mrs. O’Hair, who came to prominence decades ago for leading the fight to ban prayer and Bible reading in public schools, was a sick  and aging woman when she vanished.

She and her children disappeared along with $500,000 in gold coins after spending a month in San Antonio. They last were heard from Sept. 29, 1995, when Jon Murray spoke to atheist officials in Austin by cell phone.

Another possible victim in the  case, Danny Fry of Florida, was dumped by a riverbank east of Dallas on Oct. 2, 1995, after his head and hands had been severed. He was identified in January by  genetic testing.

The two men linked to the O’Hair family have been arrested, although neither is charged with an offense related to their disappearance or the Fry slaying.

David R. Waters, 52, of Austin, and Gary P. Karr, 50, of Novi, Mich., were charged with being felons in possession of firearms or ammunition. Both have extensive criminal records, including violent crimes.

Patrick Ganne, the Austin lawyer representing Mr. Waters, said his client was “baffled” that anyone thinks he had anything to do with the O’Hair or the Fry cases.

Mr. Waters was the office manager for Mrs. O’Hair’s atheist organizations in Austin in 1994. He has denied any contact with the family since he left their employment that spring.

In May 1995, he pleaded guilty  to stealing $54,000 from the O’Hair family and was given probation. The same month, Mr. Karr was released from an Illinois prison after serving more than 20 years for aggravated
kidnapping and armed robbery.

The two had spent eight months together in the same Illinois prison.

Mr. Karr was arrested March 25 in Michigan after agents found two loaded guns in his apartment. According to the testimony of  FBI agent William O’Leary, Mr. Karr admitted flying to New Jersey from Texas with a member of the O’Hair family in September 1995 to expedite the transfer of $600,000 to San Antonio. Travel  records  show Jon Murray made the trip with another man.
