From the Philadelphia Inquirer of May 14, 1957
The Rev. Dr. Carl McIntire, of Collingswood, long a controversial figure in Protestant Church circles, has been dropped as a member of the New Jersey Presbytery of the Bible Presbyterian Church.
Dr. McIntire and several other clergymen and elders were dropped as members and delegates at a meeting of the Presbytery at Star Cross Bible Presbyterian Church, near Cross Keys, on Saturday.
REPUDIATED IN ’55
Dr. McIntire was instrumental in founding the Bible Presbyterian Church, whose national synod repudiated his leadership at a meeting in St. Louis, Mo., in April, 1955, by withdrawing from the American Council of Christian Churches and the International Council of Christian ,Churches, of which Dr. McIntire is president.
In a widely publicized trial in 1935, Dr. McIntire was convicted of disobedience to the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. and was ordered suspended both from the ministry and the church.
RAPPED MODERNISTS
As a fundamentalist leader, he charged modernists ran the Foreign Missions Board of the church.
Later he was ordered to quit ,the pulpit and church property of Collingswood Presbyterian Church. On March 27, 1938, Dr McIntire led 1200 followers from the church “never to return.”
For the next eight weeks, he” conducted services in a huge tent at Haddon ave. and Cuthbert Collingswood, where his Bible Presbyterian Church now stands.
He was the first president of the American Council of Christian Churches and the first and only president of the International Council of Christian Churches, founded in 1948 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
IN OPPOSITION
These organizations have continually opposed the larger and much more recognized National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches.
In fact, on several occasions, the International Council of Christian Churches set up meeting several weeks prior to a scheduled meeting of the World Council of Churches in various parts of the world in an apparent effort to gain recognition.
During his 25 years in the ministry Dr, McIntire has been outspoken on local, State, national, a and international issues. He! vehemently protested against the visit of eight Russian and I Country churchmen, sponsored !by the National Council of’ Churches last summer.
SPONSOR 6 PASTORS
At the present time the American Council of Christian Churches is sponsoring six refugee clergymen from Iron Curtain countries who are scheduled to present “the true picture” of what Communism has done to religion.
He has opposed the new Standard Revised Version of the Bible, a book of plays used by Collingswood High School, the Collingswood Youth Center “as a place of public petting, necking, dancing and smoking,” bingo in New Jersey, the Garden State Race Track and numerous political candidates.
During his controversy with the synod of the Bible Presbyterian Church, he formed a Bible Presbyterian Association in opposition to the New Jersey Presbytery.
