Group Seeks McIntire Ouster
From the Philadelphia Inquirer of December 12, 1963
CAPE MAY, Dec. 11-A group of a dozen Cape May businessmen have banded together for the express purpose of making Dr. Carl McIntire. unwelcome in the community.
McIntire, who lives in Collingswood, is a fundamentalist preacher and a political right winger.
OWNS HOTEL
He, owns the Christian Admiral Hotel in Cape May and has made it a center of his religious and political activities. He often broadcasts his controversial “Twentieth Century Reformation Hour” radio program from Cape May.
McIntire aroused the ire of the Cape May citizens when he sponsored a speech in Philadelphia last week by former Gen. Edwin A. Walker, an exponent of the Birch Society, the same night that the late President Kennedy was to have spoken to a convention of the National Council of Churches.
In his radio programs, McIntire criticized Mr. Kennedy for planning to appear before the Council, calling it an alliance of Church and State.
APPEARANCE CANCELED
The Walker appearance was canceled after Mr. Kennedy’s death, but McIntire was accused of harassing the late President.
McIntire was known for his opposition to Mr. Kennedy and also for his constant charge that the National Council of Churches, which is made up of the major Protestant denominations in the United States, “aids the Communist cause.”
A spokesman for the anti-McIntire group here said the members hers feel that “unfavorable conditions follow McIntire where ever he goes.”
ADVERSE PUBLICITY
The spokesmen said it is felt that Cape May will become known as a right wing center, that publicity surrounding McIntire will reflect adversely on the entire community.
McIntire has his defenders in Cape May. Many people have commented they feel McIntire is generally good for business, that he attracts a lot of people who would not normally come to the resort.
McIntire purchased the old Admiral Hotel on the beach front, for $300,000 a year and a half ago and spent another $300,000 in renovating it.
