McIntire in Belfast Assails Catholics

BELFAST – Rev. Dr. Carl McIntire, Collingswood, N.J., preacher and leader of the fundamentalist International Council of Christian Churches, addressed a group of Protestants in this riot-torn city Sunday with a stinging attack on the Catholic civil rights movement.
McIntire, pastor of Collingswood’s Bible Presbyterian Church and president of Shelton College in Cape May, N.J., appeared as a guest of Rev. Ian Paisley, militant leader of his own Free Presbyterian Church.
In a speech before the church’s congregation in Ulster Hall Sunday morning, McIntire called on the Protestants to stand fast and said the Catholic civil rights movement in Ulster was permeated with “Marxism and Trotskyism” and was similar to the work of black revolutionaries in the United States who burned American cities.
McIntire’s address followed that of Rev. Paisley, who exhorted his congregation to vigilance against “Popism.” During a long “prayer,” Paisley castigated the press, Prime Minister Harold Wilson and William Cardinal Conway, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland.
The bitter statements by both ministers came in the wake of an accusation by the Roman Catholic hierarchy Saturday night the recent violence in Belfast had begun with systematic attacks by Protestant extremists on Catholic neighborhoods.
