Bible Believer March to Go On at Trenton
From the Philadelphia Bulletin of July 29, 1969
Trenton – (AP) – Shelton College President Carl McIntire’s march of “Bible Believers” will go on as scheduled tomorrow although the state hearing that prompted the demonstration has been postponed.
The Department of Higher Education announced yesterday the resumption of the state Board of Higher Education’s hearing to decide whether Shelton’s state license should be revoked until after Aug. 7 at the request of the law firm representing the tiny fundamentalist college in Cape May.
Not Told of Delay
McIntire, a radio evangelist who had scheduled the march to coincide with resumption of the hearings and had predicted that 1,000 of his followers would participate, told newsmen he had been informed of the request for postponement.
The department said it received a telegram from Clapp and Eisenberg, the Newark law firm representing Shelton, asking for the postponement because one of the the attorneys was about to enter a hospital for surgery.
McIntire said the march through Trenton, to be climaxed by a rally and a prayer meeting at the War Memorial Auditorium, would take place anyway because buses have been chartered, and other arrangements made, by “Bible believers” who plan to participate.
600 Appeared Last Month
Some 600 McIntire followers showed up here last month when the Board of Higher Education opened the hearings on the Department of Higher Education’s recommendation that Shelton be stripped of state authorization to confer the bachelor of arts degree.
The department charged that Shelton failed to meet state standards on 19 different counts, including alleged financial instability, offering of degrees for which it has no authorization, and high turnover in administrative personnel.
McIntire, however, claimed that the state’s action was prompted by his enemies in the church world and sees the matter as a “confrontation of bureaucratic liberals vs. Bible believers.”
